Course Description

This one-day studio workshop focuses on the use of light in portrait photography, exploring the power and importance of light in image making. It includes hands-on shooting demos with a model and exercises on how to employ different lighting techniques and sources. Students will learn to set up and use professional studio lighting equipment and explore how light and shadows work together. Students will be able to share their work with peers and get feedback in group discussions. Theoretical foundations will be explored to understand the use of light not just as a tool, but also as a creative language rich in meaning, rhetoric, and poetry.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Explore different lighting sources, such as natural light, flash lighting, and continuous lighting,
  • Understand the core light theory (hard vs. soft light),
  • Practice a wide variety of lighting setups with a hands-on lighting session,
  • Practice using different lighting equipment,
  • Learn necessary camera and flash settings and know how to synchronize them,
  • Learn how to work with your models,
  • Gain skills in controlling light to create images that tell your story.
