Course Description

This intermediate course build on the skills developed in Sewing Skills Studio. Students will learn professional ways of constructing and designing details in clothing, including pockets, buttons and buttonholes, zipper closures, and collars. Students will have the option to incorporate these details into garments of their choice or to learn the processes with sample garments. Through studio work, as well as class discussions, students will gain an understanding of the general logic and order of garment construction with the goal of enabling them to make and modify clothing on their own.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Construct and install garment details including pockets (inseam, patch), buttons and buttonholes, zipper closures (zipper, invisible zipper, fly), and a collar with a stand,
  • Modify existing patterns for garment details to suit individual design aesthetics,
  • Apply professional construction and finishing techniques including marking, pressing, topstitching and edge stitching, using guides and hemming,
  • Identify a logical and efficient order in which to construct a garment.

Recommended Prerequisites

CSFD-N102 - Sewing Skills Studio or equivalent experience.
