Course Description

In this studio course, students explore the design and function of packaging, including product protection, safety, communication, brand identity, and advertising. Topics include logo design, typography, pictorial elements, and colour theory. Students will also examine the environmental impact of contemporary package design and sustainable solutions. Studio work will be supported by technical demonstrations, presentations, and critique.

Access to Adobe Illustrator is recommended.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Distinguish visual elements that are required for successful packaging
  • Gain a practical knowledge of the technical and marketing factors required for package design
  • Acquire a hands-on experience of the package design process through introduction to the creative brief, packaging dieline and assignment to redesign the packaging for an existing product
