Course Description

Through practical studio exercises, students in this course will learn to repair woven and knit textiles in order to extend their lifespans. Mending techniques reduce a textile’s environmental footprint. Repairing, altering, and updating textiles are powerful ways to gain more value from the resources invested in creating them. Using hand techniques, minimal tools, and accessible materials, students will develop skills in patching, darning, and Swiss darning. Visible and invisible repair techniques will be discussed with an emphasis on functionality as well as the art and design potential of textile repairs.
