Course Description

This intermediate course builds on the skills learned in Woodworking Fundamentals, exploring the design and construction process of a utilitarian artistic object, using wood as the primary material. Students will engage in the process of ideation, documentation, fabrication, and presentation of this object. Course topics include learning traditional woodworking techniques such as joineries and finishing, as well as modern methodologies with fasteners and power tools. While the material fee covers most of the materials required for this course, students may need to purchase additional materials that are specific to their designs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the design process of creating a wooden artifact, including ideation, two-dimensional representation and three-dimensional prototyping,
  • Analyze and select the best methods of material manipulation of wood,
  • Understand the application and articulation of wood joinery,
  • Produce wood joinery using machinery as well as traditional hand tools,
  • Safely operate woodworking machineries and power tools,
  • Understand the property and strength of wood as a material, as well as its limitations.

Recommended Prerequisites

CSSI-N105 Woodworking Fundamentals or equivalent experience.
