Course Description

As independent creators, self-generators, and entrepreneurs, artists spend much of their time working alone. Working collaboratively, this course focuses on skills such as listening, responding with confidence, taking risks, and focusing. In this course, students are taken through a series of improvisational drawing exercises adapted from collaborative acting exercises. These exercises remind the students to listen to their intuitive impulses and take risks spontaneously. Incremental practice at taking risks stretches a student's courage, helping them to see that taking risks is not only beneficial to their practice, but fun. Taking risks is a trainable behavior; artists can learn to accept the accidental and the unexpected as process drivers and through playful repetition open up new ways of thinking. In a pressure-free setting, students rediscover how to play, how to listen to their creative impulses, and how to reconnect with their passion for making art.
