Course Description

In this course students learn to create rich and vibrant textile dyes from local wild plants, insects, and other domestic natural materials. Topics include the science of applying mordants to natural fibres, learning over-dyeing method to achieve the full palette of colours, and developing a sustainable contemporary textile art practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 

• Learn natural dye sources and the natural dyeing processes with mordants.
• Explore both traditional and experimental dyeing techniques.
• Develop own colour sense as well as the technical aspects of obtaining colour with fibre while exploring in both functional and expressive textile art.
• Produce a comprehensive natural dye research sample book.
