Course Description

This studio course introduces students to the fundamentals of pattern drafting, developing the skills needed to make their own original clothing. Students will learn basic pattern blocks for bottoms and tops based on their own measurements and will troubleshoot common fitting problems. Using these pattern blocks, students will also learn the fundamentals of pattern manipulation (dart manipulation and creating volume) in order to create various styles for bottoms and tops. 

Students are required to have basic sewing skills to take this course.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Develop pattern blocks for bottoms and tops based on custom measurements,
  • Recognise when clothing fits; identify where clothing is not fitting and alter patterns to correct fit,
  • Design with pattern blocks by manipulating darts and adjusting fullness,
  • Interpret a sketch or image of a garment design and create it through pattern manipulation.
