Course Description

This course introduces students to hand-sewing and simple hand tools for professional quality textile construction techniques. Students will learn the basic techniques of planning and developing original garments and unique sculptural forms. Students will also learn the historical, cultural, environmental, and sustainable considerations of hand-sewing and garment repair. A variety of construction details such as zippers, buttonholes, and collars will be explored. This course covers the basics of sewing construction which can be applied to art, craft, and design production.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Acquire knowledge of the material affordances and sculptural properties of hand-sewing
  • Differentiate historical and couture hand-sewing techniques used in the construction of garments
  • Become proficient in designing and executing a variety of construction elements, including sewing and finishing seams and hems, adjusting fullness through gathering, pleats, and darts, and creating collars, pockets, and closures
  • Possess ability of cultural, environmental, and sustainable considerations of hand-sewing and garment repair
