Learn to design with AI, beyond just using it. As AI reshapes the practice of design, designers need new ways to collaborate with intelligent systems while keeping human needs at the center. This course explores how to design with AI, design for AI, and apply AI responsibly in real-world design practice. 

Focusing on two frameworks, this course explores: 1. Designing user interfaces and 2. Designing to make AI tools domain-intelligent and integrated within a professional design workflow. Over six weeks, students will learn to design an infrastructure that makes AI tools intelligent within a domain: the guidelines, design patterns, HITL (human-in-the-loop handoff patterns, the UX layer that determines whether users trust, understand, and can override AI behaviour), thresholds, and user context that sit beneath any AI skill or workflow. 

Throughout the course, critical AI literacy will be embedded as practice: comparing outputs across tools, investigating what models know and don't know, and developing the knowledge and skillset to evaluate AI applications effectively. Students will gain practical frameworks, hands-on experience, and a focused way to design with and for AI, without losing sight of human needs and ethical responsibilities.

Students must have access to Claude Pro (Pro version, $20 USD/month) and V0 (free version) to complete course work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Apply a two-path framework to distinguish designing AI interfaces (what users see and interact with) from designing the context layer (what makes AI tools domain-aware and reliable),
  • Design trust signals, HITL handoff patterns, and transparent error states for AI-powered product interfaces,
  • Build a shared context layer, domain guidelines, HITL thresholds, and design patterns, that makes AI tools reliable and reusable across a professional workflow,
  • Develop discernment in evaluating AI-generated design work against professional standards, building taste, execution, and AI leverage as an ongoing practice.

 

Recommended Prerequisites

CSDM-N151 Introduction to User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) Design or equivalent experience.

Online courses are delivered in an asynchronous format through a series of tutorials and related assignments which students may complete at their own pace on our Learning Management System, Canvas.
