Course Description

Time and the organization of space are fundamental to filmmaking. In this course you will learn foundational principles of filmmaking with an emphasis on the construction of spatial and temporal relationships that explore the interplay between form and content

You will learn how to identify and articulate formal strategies and develop a critical language around the way meaning is made through images in sequence. Examples will be drawn from a wide range of films across genres including narrative, documentary and experimental film. You will produce short videos based on prompts designed to explore space-time relationships. To complete the assignments a video camera is recommended but a smartphone can be used. Access to, and a working knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere is required. In addition to completing assignments, students will have the option to participate in live, instructor-led discussions and critiques. This supplemental experience allows students to engage with one another as they explore the topics of the course and share feedback.
