Course Description

In this intermediate course, students will be introduced to the best practices of portraiture. Through the investigation of various conceptual and formal approaches to contemporary portrait photography, students will have the chance to improve their photographic skills. Technical demos, slide presentations, and criticisms will accompany the studio work. Natural and artificial lighting for studio portraiture, as well as image editing techniques tailored to people photography, will be covered in the course.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Gear considerations for portrait photography
- Elements of effective portraits: the difference between commercial and fine art portraiture
- Environmental portrait
- Seeing and working with natural light
- Studio portraiture: lighting considerations and lighting techniques
- How to use non-destructive editing techniques for portraiture
Students must have access to and working knowledge of a digital SLR or mirrorless camera.
