Course Description

This workshop explores the fundamental skills in textile repair and repurposing. These skills will be contextualized within a broader discussion of sustainability in clothing and other textiles from the perspectives of creators and consumers. Students will be introduced to a variety of contemporary and historical textile repair techniques, including machine- and hand-darning, needle felting, patching, and Sachiko. Through discussion, and studio work, students will collaboratively develop a manifesto that outlines their principles, goals and practices for greater sustainability in fashion and textiles and create individual textile repair sample books. Students will be encouraged to develop their personal aesthetic in the context of mending and to think of repairs as active design elements in an object. An emphasis will be placed on visible mending techniques where the textile repair transforms the design of the garment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Create functional repairs in a variety of fabrics,
  • Identify appropriate repairs for a given project, based on design, material, type and extent of damage,
  • Articulate and apply their aesthetic and design convictions in the context mending.

"Learning how to repair clothing extends the lifespan of your garments. Repairs can be functional, but also creative when incorporated into the design. Visible repairs draw attention to themselves, allowing a garment to change and develop as it is worn out."
