Much of today's art compulsively looks backwards for ideas to take into the future. Prompted by this impulse, our thematically-oriented discussions examine the return in contemporary art of such influential issues as art for art's sake, identity politics and the artist's persona. Having been raided from the past, how are these themes updated, reworked and woven into the cultural fabric of the twenty-first century. And might today's art offer us anything new, as, for instance, when it engages with recent technology, emerging philosophies or current social conditions.
